Osan Observes POW/MIA week from 16-19 September.
OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea --
The Osan Air Force Sergeants Association chapter and VFW Post 10216 sponsored National Prisoner of War and Missing in Action week here Sept. 16 -19. There were events and demonstrations, to include reveille and retreat, informational booths, a candle light vigil and a 24-bour run. The week's events concluded with the POWIM1A Remembrance and Memorial Dedication Ceremony Sept 19.
Post 10216 POW/MIA Chairman was Tom Bergam and Department of Pacific Commander Shawn Watson was the guest speaker for the POW/MIA Ceremony on 19 Sept. Doc Higgins led the POW/MIA 24-hour run for the 3rd consecutive year and many VFW members participated in events throughout the week.
The celebration was to honor the sacrifices of unaccounted-for comrades in-arms and the zeal of the families who are unsure of their status. Observances of National POW/ MIA Recognition week were held across the U.S. and overseas on military installations, ships at sea, state capitols, schools and veterans' facilities. This observance is one of six days throughout the year that Congress has mandated the flying of the National League of Families' POWIMIA flag. Below is a list events from the week:
Sept. 16: 7 a.m. Reveille at the wing headquarters building -10 a.m. POWIMIA information table at the Exchange.
Sept. 17: 10 a.m. Visit on base middle and high schools.
Sept. 18: 9 a.m. POW/MIA candle light vigil at the Base Chapel
and 4:30 p.m. Retreat; 4:45 p.m. 24-hour run starts with the POW/MIA Flag.
Sept. 19: 4 p.m. POW/MIA Remembrance and Memorial Dedication Ceremony at the Base Theater.
